Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

2FA provides a second layer of protection to deter unauthorized access to our system and will ensure our systems remain highly available. 2FA will be required for TC’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) service sometime in April (The implementation date will be announced).

What is 2FA?

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is a second layer of security to protect our system and sensitive data from unauthorized users. The 2FA will use two forms of identity before allowing you access to the system:

  • Enter your Taft College username and password.
  • Use a physical device such as a phone, tablet, or external email to confirm your identity.

A message is sent with a One-Time Passcode (OTP) to type in to complete the 2FA process. You may also install the Google Authenticator app on your phone or tablet for your convenience.

What does that mean for me?

Previously, when you connected remotely to the TC, VPN, you would enter your username and password. When 2FA is active, you will be prompted for the 2nd verification to connect to Cougar Tracks.

Why has TC implemented 2FA?

Growing concerns of stolen data from phishing scams and other vulnerabilities was our driving force. We want our students, faculty, and staff to feel secure with the knowledge that we have implemented the securest measurements available to keep our data safe.

How do I get started with 2FA?

Am I required to install an app on my phone?

No. Although, the Google Authenticator app is the most convenient 2nd factor option, you are not required to install it on your device.

If you are interested in the Google Authenticator app, it is a small app so it would take up little room on your phone. It’s free and can be installed on your cell or a tablet.

What if I don’t have a Wi-Fi connection or cellular reception?

You would want to have the Google Authenticator app because you don’t need cellular data or an internet connection to generate a passcode on your phone or tablet.
